Colin Braun Crushes Mike Calinoff in Social Media Contest
MOORESVILLE, NC (December 15, 2009) - Colin Braun beat Mike Calinoff by a landslide in a head-to-head social media battle last week. The 10-day contest featured the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Braun, and Activ8 Communications CEO and Matt Kenseth's spotter Calinoff, in a competition to gain the most Twitter followers.
The contest, which culminated at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show in Orlando, FL, matched the two NASCAR notables against each other for the moral victory. The loser agreed to wear a bee costume, which resembles Activ8's official mascot "B.B. Sting," at the trade show.
Calinoff, who finished last in the contest, lived up to his promise and wore the bee costume around the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Fans lined up around the Activ8 booth to get a glimpse of Calinoff sporting the red and black bee costume.
"Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not easily embarrassed," said Calinoff. "However, wearing that costume among my peers, industry leaders and staff stung a little."
Meanwhile, Braun was all smiles watching the big bee buzzing around the large convention center. Braun has recently gained intrigue in social media, interacting with fans, providing an inside look into his life on and off the track.
"Seeing Mike in the bee costume was great," Braun said. "It was a good look for him."
After beating Calinoff, Braun has a goal to gain 100,000 followers and continue his victories in the social media world.
Final Tallies
Braun started the contest with 1,094 followers. In a dramatic increase and a surge of followers down the stretch, Braun finished the contest with an increase of 1,114 followers for a total of 2,208.
Calinoff began the competition with 2,009 followers and increased his following to 2,234, a 225 follower gain.
"This contest demonstrated the intense power of social media and how it can instantly generate results," said Calinoff.
Both Braun and Calinoff wish to continue gaining followers and are extending their reach to other social networking sites.
